Getting Your Mustang
So you decided on getting a Mustang. Congratulations!
There are several ways you can attain a Mustang and we would like to list a few.
Just as a precaution you should QT any horse you get for 30 days
then allow time for your new horse to meet your herd if you have other horses.
Private Sale:
This is buying from someone who either owns or has adopted this horse and now has title to it.
Once you pay the amount the owner is asking for the horse, the horse is yours outright. If it is a
titled Mustang you should have the title in hand and transfer the horse in your name on the back of the title. There have been Mustangs sold without title which is illegal.
If you don't have the title you can shave the area where the brand on the left side of the neck is and get the number and you can find out how old the horse is and the HMA it came from.
Some have issues with BLM trying to get information or a copy of the title and some haven't, I would
still, try and be nice they have tons of horses to go through.
Private Rescue:
These horses have been rescued from either kill pens, kill buyers or auctions or from owner turnovers, and sometimes legal seizures.
Now not all rescues are on the up and up so check out the rescue you choose carefully, ask plenty of questions.
Now ownership is so so here, some rescues retain ownership or legal right to the horse, some turn over ownership after a period of time.
Some rescues require the horse owner have some of the items they require before an adoption can go through.
BLM Adoptions:
If you choose this option, you have a couple of options, there are prisoner trained animals, TIP
trainers who start the horses or full train them. There are also horses available from certain ranches or events like the Extreme Mustang Makeover.
If a horse is a Re-Assignment horse you must have the BLM requirements you can find here
And most are unhandled wild and need a patient and strong trainer someone who is firm but
not abusive.
You can find an adoption event near you here, remember there are requirements you must have in
place prior and there is a trailer requirement.
Kill Buyer/ Feed Lot:
If you choose this option please be aware these horses are in conditions and transported in
dirty trailers so diseases are prevalent in some of the horses so make sure you quarantine
the horse for at least 30 days to ensure you do not sicken any other horses you may have.
They fundraise for some of these horses so be sure you know whom you are dealing with moneywise.
The FREE Horse:
There is no such thing as a FREE horse, sure you don't pay to get the horse, but the horse could have medical or training issues. So know whom you are dealing with and take someone who knows horses as a second pair of eyes. Ask as many questions as you can, get some background on the horse if possible.
Buying Sight Unseen:
This itself can be troublesome, from bait and switch to the horse not being what was advertised. If you do make sure you get a background on the person selling the horse and if you have horse friends in that area ask them to check the horse out for you.
This would include Facebook pals you have known for a while.
Although this is done we don't recommend this way of buying a horse for obvious reasons.
